Phillips on rash of injuries: ‘We’ve got to be creative’

On defense, Kentucky could have even more players shifting positions in hopes of filling gaps for injured players.

“Hey, gotta be creative,” Coach Joker Phillips said after discussing injuries. “That’s where we’re at. We’ve got to be creative.”

Linebacker/safety hybrid Miles Simpson (bruised knee) practiced on Thursday and is expected to be able to play Saturday, but UK is especially banged up at that position with Josh Forrest and Kory Brown both gimpy. Strong safety Ashely Lowery has seen time at that spot as a fill-in and Martavius Neloms is working at safety again.

  • Phillips said quarterback Maxwell Smith’s ankle surgery went well on Tuesday, but he didn’t offer a timetable for the sophomore’s return. “They think, again, it’s going to be hard to get back this year, but we’ll work toward it.”
  • Defensive tackle Mister Cobble (infection) has practiced this week and likely will be the starter versus Mississippi State.
