QB Newton ‘very limited’ again and other notes

Quarterback Morgan Newton was “very limited” again Wednesday on his injured right ankle and did not take any snaps at Wednesday’s practice, Coach Joker Phillips said.

If the junior isn’t able to go again Thursday, it likely will be Maxwell Smith as the starter.

But the coach said they have to have a backup quarterback, “so we might even wait to say if he’s going to play or not. Whether or not he’s going to be a starter, we’ll probably have to say tomorrow.”

Phillips said Smith’s positive game against Mississippi State has given the freshman some confidence.

“He looks good,” Phillips said. “I’ve never heard him tell anyone what to do because he’s always worried about what he’s supposed to do. I saw a lot of that today. I’m proud of him and the way he’s carrying himself.”

Phillips had to carry a cheat sheet as he gave the media today’s injury updates, so here’s the laundry list:

CoShik Williams practiced half the practice, then went down with the same tweaked foot. Fellow running back Raymond Sanders practiced today and pulled himself out for second half of practice, but Phillips expects both should be better come game time. Brandon Gainer and some of the younger backs got significant reps in practice.

“We need to have both of those guys, but (Ole Miss is) not going to cancel the game,” Phillips said of Sanders and Williams. “Maybe we can call them and they can give us another week.”

  • Receiver La’Rod King practiced but without contact for a second day after getting banged up vs. MSU.
  • Donte Rumph (knee) did practice today.
  • Randall Burden did not practice after getting stepped on at practice yesterday. The senior cornerback and punt returner was wearing a boot after practice today on his left foot.
